It’s August 31, 2026: Schools across the country recently observed National Sports Day 2026 on August 29, following a CBSE circular encouraging affiliated schools to organise sports and fitness activities under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat.”
National Sports Day is celebrated every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary Indian hockey player, and to recognise the country’s rich sporting heritage.
For the 2026 celebrations, the Fit India movement, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, promoted the campaign around three key pillars — “Tribute, Play and Move.” CBSE encouraged schools, teachers, students and communities to participate actively and make the occasion a vibrant celebration of sports and fitness.
Key Activities Highlighted by CBSE
As part of the celebrations, schools were encouraged to organise and participate in a range of activities, including:
- Digital Tributes to celebrate India’s sporting icons
- The energetic 29 Challenge
- ‘Pass the Ball’ activity
- ‘Sports Bandhan’
- ‘Ek Ghanta Khel ke Maidan Mein’, encouraging people to spend an hour playing on the field
- ‘Sundays on Cycle’, a health-focused cycling activity held on August 30
Schools were advised to adapt these activities according to their local conditions, traditional regional sports, available infrastructure and students’ age groups, while ensuring safety, accessibility, inclusivity and maximum participation.
CBSE Encourages Continued Focus on Sports and Fitness
The National Sports Day activities aimed to encourage students and communities to move beyond classroom learning and embrace sports, physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
CBSE had also provided schools with a range of campaign resources, including posters, banners, social media creatives, National Sports Day photo frames and T-shirt designs, which could be adapted for school-level celebrations.
Following the activities, schools were also requested to share details of their celebrations through the Google Form provided by CBSE.
The recent celebrations highlight the importance of creating a stronger sports and fitness culture among students and encouraging greater participation in physical activities.
