The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all affiliated schools to integrate the Tele-MANAS Mental Health Services into their institutions, ensuring wider accessibility of free, confidential, and stigma-free mental health support for students.
The Tele-MANAS (Tele-Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States) programme, launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India on 10th October 2022, has already addressed over 23 lakh calls through 53 dedicated cells across states and UTs. The service operates 24×7, is available in 20 languages, and is handled by trained mental health professionals.
Recognising the unique needs of adolescents, the Ministry has also rolled out:
- A Video Consultation Platform for real-time confidential sessions
- A Tele-MANAS Mobile App (available in Hindi and English, with more regional languages planned)
Key Measures for Schools
All CBSE schools have been instructed to:
- Display Helpline Numbers – 14416 and 1800-891-4416, along with the QR code of the Tele-MANAS app in visible areas like counselor rooms, notice boards, libraries, and ICT labs.
- Spread Awareness – Include Tele-MANAS information in school newsletters, student handbooks, assemblies, and PTMs.
- Use Government Resources – Play IEC videos from MoHFW during wellness and life-skills activities.
- Build Counselor Capacity – Train school counselors and wellness coordinators to refer students when necessary.
- Promote Peer-Led Initiatives – Encourage student-led awareness activities under Samagra Shiksha and PM SHRI Schools.
Why It Matters
Schools are critical in shaping the emotional resilience of students. By integrating Tele-MANAS services, CBSE aims to ensure every learner has access to timely mental health care, promoting a healthy, confident, and future-ready generation.
