The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially introduced a new curriculum on ‘Computational Thinking (CT) and Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI)’ for students of Classes 3 to 8, starting from the academic session 2026–27.
This initiative aligns with the vision of National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, focusing on developing essential 21st-century skills among students. The curriculum aims to enhance learners’ ability to think logically, solve problems systematically, recognize patterns, and understand the ethical use of AI.
In addition to student learning, CBSE has also declared CT & AI as the training theme for teachers in the current session. The goal is to equip educators with effective teaching strategies to integrate these concepts across subjects like Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and Languages.
Key Focus Areas:
- Foundations of Computational Thinking & AI readiness
- Interdisciplinary learning across subjects
- Real-world AI applications
- Ethical and responsible use of AI
- Assessment and pedagogy in CT & AI
Planned Activities for Schools:
CBSE has outlined multiple activities to ensure effective implementation:
1. District Level Workshops (DLDs):
Offline sessions to share best practices and select top presentations for national-level recognition.
2. Expert-led Talks:
Online/offline sessions by experts to provide deeper insights into CT & AI topics.
3. Regional Workshops by CBSE:
Organized through Centres of Excellence (CoEs), offering structured training with certification.
These initiatives aim to create a future-ready learning environment, where students are encouraged to explore AI, coding, data science, and interdisciplinary projects while maintaining ethical awareness.
Schools are encouraged to actively participate, nominate teachers, and organize these activities to ensure smooth implementation of the curriculum.
