The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released Students’ and Teachers’ Resource Books for Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (CT & AI) for Classes 3 to 8, marking another major step toward integrating future-ready skills into school education.
This initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), which aims to position India as a global leader in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, and Computational Thinking. The framework also supports the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 (NCFSE-23).
According to CBSE, Computational Thinking (CT) forms the foundation for understanding Artificial Intelligence. The curriculum introduces students to skills such as pattern recognition, problem decomposition, algorithmic thinking, cybersecurity basics, and ethical use of AI.
These resource books are not traditional textbooks. Instead, they are designed as companion materials to NCERT Mathematics textbooks, following the same chapter sequence. This allows teachers to seamlessly integrate computational thinking activities into daily classroom instruction.
Teachers are encouraged to:
- Review concepts before teaching chapters
- Use thinking-based questions to encourage reasoning
- Facilitate discussions instead of directly giving solutions
- Conduct activities that build curiosity and understanding
- Encourage students to explore multiple problem-solving strategies
The books emphasize thinking over memorization, promoting creativity, logical reasoning, and independent learning among students.
CBSE has also announced that:
- The CT & AI curriculum framework for Classes 3–8 aims to create AI-literate learners by 2030.
- The curriculum includes CT + AI + Ethics + Unplugged Learning.
- Existing AI courses for Class IX will be discontinued from the academic session 2026-27.
- Students of Class X (2026-27) will continue with the existing scheme.
- The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will provide CT & AI modules for Classes 9 to 12, which will be used for internal assessment.
Schools affiliated with CBSE are advised to download these resource books from the official CBSE academic website and begin using them as part of regular teaching to strengthen students’ analytical and technological skills.
This move highlights CBSE’s continued focus on technology-enabled, interactive, and future-oriented education to prepare students for the demands of a digital world.
