The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued an important clarification regarding the calculation of marks in cases where students attempt more questions than required in the Class XII Board Examinations 2026.
According to CBSE, several students who obtained scanned copies of their evaluated answer books raised concerns about apparent discrepancies between the marks shown on the calculation sheet and the final marks awarded. The Board has clarified that these differences occur mainly in cases where students answer additional questions despite internal choices being provided in the question paper.
CBSE stated that it has always followed a policy of considering the best score obtained by a student when multiple optional questions are attempted. Any extra question or sub-part that is not counted towards the final result is marked as “Over Attempt” and indicated with an asterisk (*) in the answer book.
For example, if a student attempts both Question 31(a) and Question 31(b), despite being required to answer only one of them, the system automatically considers the higher score between the two. The marks from the lower-scoring answer are excluded from the final total and marked with an asterisk. A footnote in the calculation sheet indicates that the starred marks have been omitted from totaling.
CBSE further explained that the system ensures students receive the maximum benefit by counting the higher marks wherever internal choices are available. The Board also reminded students to carefully check the asterisk marks and accompanying footnotes before calculating their total marks from the scanned answer book.
This clarification aims to address confusion among students and parents during the post-result verification and re-evaluation process and to ensure greater transparency in the evaluation system.
