The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released an official FAQ document explaining the newly introduced On Screen Marking (OSM) system used for evaluating Class 12 Board Examination 2026 answer sheets.
According to CBSE, the idea of OSM was first conceptualised in 2014, but due to technological limitations and scanning challenges, it could not be implemented at that time. After years of research and testing, the Board successfully introduced the digital evaluation system in 2026 for Class 12 examinations.
Under the OSM system, students still write their exams on physical answer sheets, but instead of manual checking using paper copies, the answer books are scanned and evaluated digitally by teachers on computer screens.
CBSE clarified that the marking scheme and evaluation standards remain exactly the same as traditional checking methods. The only difference is that evaluators now award marks digitally using a computer and mouse instead of pen and paper.
The Board highlighted several major benefits of the OSM system, including:
- Elimination of totalling and uploading errors
- Better transparency and accountability
- Faster result processing
- Reduced manual handling of answer books
- Eco-friendly paperless evaluation
- Improved secrecy and security of answer scripts
- Automatic calculation of marks
CBSE also informed that extensive training sessions, mock evaluations, webinars, practice portals, and technical support were provided to teachers before the implementation of the system.
To ensure quality and accuracy, multiple levels of scanning checks were introduced. Evaluators were also given the option to reject blurred or unclear scanned answer books so they could be rescanned before evaluation.
The Board further clarified that computers are not checking answers automatically. Evaluation is still completely done by trained teachers, while technology only assists in making the process more accurate and efficient.
CBSE stated that OSM has been introduced to improve transparency, reduce human errors, and make the evaluation process faster and more reliable for lakhs of students across the country.
